About Those August Plans...

I went to see my orthopedic doc as I was entering week 4 and still in quite a bit of pain. He said it was still very swollen and was healing slower than he'd like. I'm thinking that I started using it too soon...at any rate, he decided 2-3 weeks of complete immobilization should do the trick, and that "by Labor Day", I should be able to resume normal activity.

whine.

It's a splint that has been custom-molded to my hand. It IS removable - thankfully!! - so I can shower easily. But aside from that, I will be wearing full-time.

Being the complete hooligan that I am, told a coworker, "I'm going to trim it and free my fingers." She said, "Uhmm...I don't think he WANTS you using your fingers..."

Oh. Fair point...Hahahahahaha!!!!! (I should basically never be left alone.)

So no sewing for me for awhile (pure torture!). But my Kindle will get a workout! Drop some book recommendations in the comments please <3

Until later...

  1. So sorry! I have the same splint on right now. I was hit and run by a drunk driver this past November. I just had two more surgeries to fix my hand. My right hand. My dominant hand. By the time this is done, I will have spent 20 weeks with my right hand immobilized. I'm going crazy.

    Listen to the doc!!

  2. Sorry to hear this - please listen to the doctor and heal well and completely before you start anything. I just had foot surgery myself. Can't drive, can't stand to cut anything out...making me crazy! Book recs: Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follett. The Girl Who Stayed, Tanya Anne Crosby. Year of Wonders, Geraldine Brooks. What She Knew, Gilly McMillan.

  3. OH NO! This seriously sucks.

At least you can read about sewing tho. If I were in your position, I would check out every sewing book from my local library and read them all. Those who can't do, read. 8-D

  4. Oh how awful! Wishing you a speedy recovery xxx

  5. I'm so sorry to hear this, I've been following this saga and feeling so frustrated for you!
Books I've read this summer and LOVED: "Who fears Death" - Nnedni Okorafor "The Underground Railroad" Colin Whitehead, "The Girl on the Train" (yeah I know I'm like 2 summers behind on this one, but it's really gripping!) and a really fun detective/magic series by Ben Aronovitch that begins with Midnight Riot - if you like the first one, there are more (I'm obsessed, I re-read them when I'm feeling blue!)

  6. Nooo!!! So sorry to hear! Hope it heals up for real this time.

  7. Also check over at Pattern Review; I know there are a couple of discussions there.

I enjoyed Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I have read several of her books and liked them.

Right now, I am finishing up The Spiral Staircase by Ethel Lina White. That is pretty suspenseful.

Cassandra Clare's Infernal Devices series was really good. It starts with Clockwork Angel.

It may be better to check out my Goodreads list: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/20514857-charlene-morris?order=a&shelf=read&sort=author&utm_campaign=mybooksnav&utm_content=mybooks_cta&utm_medium=web&utm_source=homepage

  8. So sorry to hear about this. I agree with the others, listen to the doc. Although it's not easy to give up something you love to do. My sewing plans have been delayed also (problems with my eyes). Ahh well, like they say, this too shall pass...

  9. Before we were yours. Just finished it. It's a good read. How about the great British sewing show. Total binge watching worthy. Feel better!

  10. Obviously that just means you should come fabric shopping with everyone from the fb group on Saturday lol

  12. Dayum that sucks! Have you read any Greg Illes books - they are great and the last series is on my summer reading list. BTW, September will be here before you know it!

  13. Oh no, must be incredibly frustrating and I hope it heals well. No hacking of the splint, ok??!!

  14. Now that is painful in so many ways! Enjoy your reading and mental sewing. And rest!

  15. Pfft -that's no fun.
I recommend anything by Laurie R King.

  16. Glad the splint will solve the problem and hope you are not in pain.

  17. In The Woods by Tana French, a very unique and engrossing thriller.

  18. So sorry you are still having issues with your hand. Just listen to the doctor- as everyone else has said.
    Finding Gideon- Eric Jerome Dickey
    Anything by Kimberla Lawson Roby
and any Alex Cross book by James Patterson

  19. Oh no!! Hope this heals the hand--and no cheating! You want to heal correctly.

  20. Awwww Man! Put those younginn's to work. "cut this pattern out or you're grounded!" LOL!!! Feel better and no foolin with the splint! I actually followed doctors orders twice and it turned out well! Feel better!!!!!

  21. Ugh, that's the worst! I'd second Isaspacey's suggestion of In the Woods by Tana French - I loved the unique story structure not just from chapter to chapter, but book to book (if you want to read past the first one).

What kind of books do you like? I'm a fan of thrillers and mysteries, the loosely historical, and science fiction, but you might be looking for other recommendations entirely!

  22. I am so sorry to hear your hand is healing slowly! I understand the impatience too! Doesn't your hand know you have a life, LOL!!!

My book recommendation is Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. It is my all-time favorite! Best wishes to you!

  23. I'm so sorry! I had a feeling something like that would happen when it was still so swollen. Leave the splint alone and do what the Dr tells you. If there is even the slightest chance that doing this will make it heal, isn't it worth it? It certainly wasn't getting better on its own, right? You could read The Dressmaker and then see the movie. Watch every episode of The Great British Sewing Bee. Watch Isaac Mizrahis Unzipped and the docu about Iris Apfel. Get caught up on blogs and find every single indie pattern company. Time will fly and hopefully you will be healed and ready to start sewing. Oh, find some electric scissors. I got a never used pair at an estate sale and they worked beautifully and helped me not feel pain in my hand. If forgotten how nice they can be.

  24. How frustrating. Hopefully things will settle soon, although I suspect if this immobilization works, you will need to continue being easy on the wrist afterwards, perhaps even splinting it at night. Well wishes...

  25. Well that sucks. Just leave it alone... step away from the scissors and pick up the kindle. I read A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. It was harrowing but a terrific book.

  26. So sorry that you are having this issue. I miss seeing your makes! Listen to the doctor so that you don't have to go longer than Labor Day!

  27. Oh what a bummer but don't worry, you will be sewing again soon enough!

  28. Sorry to read this, wishing you a speedy recovery and hopefully you'll be relaxing and not missing sewing too much. Although, I'll miss seeing your makes. I know it's hard not to be able to do the things you want to be doing and it sucks but take care of yourself. Hugs.

  29. So very frustrating.

As for reading - all the science & medical articles you've been "meaning to read". I love anything by Ben Aaronovitch, Kerry Greenwood, Peter Temple and Ellis Peters. The Lord of the Rings will certainly keep you occupied, The Hobbit is an easier read.

    Wishing you well.

  30. Bummer about your hand. The best book I read this year was "A Man Called Ove" by Fredrik Backman. Someone recommended "The Dressmaker" and I enjoyed that also. Project Runway starts August 17! Hopefully you can make it until then. Hope you hand is better soon.

    1. Forgot to mention "Dirty Chick: Adventures of an Unlikely Farmer" by Antonia Murphy. I read this a couple of years ago, but it was laugh out loud funny. :)
