This pattern has been super popular since it was released about a year ago. I really wanted to make it in my kelly green silk charmeuse last fall but never got around to it. I chose this chambray (likely from FM) which is fairly soft but I still think it's a bit too stiff. I would definitely use something with more drape (like silk charmeuse!) the next time.
The FBA was rotated into the gathers. I think the facing is a little wimpy.
Immediately after cutting out the fronts, I used fusible stay tape and I had no stretching out and no neckline gaping. I added shorter ties than they mentioned to the inside. The stitching that's holding it in place is itchy :( and I don't like the tie anyway, it's awkward. I should have done a loop and button like I started to.
I read the instructions twice and *I* didn't see where they instructed you to make a buttonhole on the right front for view C. For some steps, they referred to the instructions for views A/B but this wasn't one.
I thought the sleeve band instructions were atrocious. I was so annoyed after doing the first one that I'm sure it was more than a day later before I sewed the second one. And really, while it isn't a difficult pattern, overall the instructions could be a lot better. It's been a long time since I was utterly confused by a set of instructions.
The ties are short!! Grr. I think I cut them at the largest size and can't really make a bow.
I really like my chambray shirt but it took awhile to grow on me. I like the idea of this but I don't love it. I think it's the fabric. It's super cute with quite a few things in my wardrobe but so far it's just been sitting on Lily (my dressform). I'm hoping it grows on me a bit!
They definitely don't mention the buttonhole for View C. I finished mine and was like "Hey, where the button?"

I felt the same about the tie, facing and belt! stage sleeves as well. I would def make again but with my own construction and probably finish with bias tape for facing. yours is cute though!

ReplyDeleteSo after you mentioned the fabric was a little too stiff, I wondered whether the top would be comfortable to wear. Woven tops are so tricky - if the fabric and fit isn't perfect I often find them uncomfortable. That said, it *looks* fabulous. I love how you styled it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Masha!! I don't have too tough a time with woven tops. I usually prefer them! And it's stiff in that way that cotton shirting can be...a *little* too much body. It will soften up with time (and washing) though!
DeleteHa! I just bought this pattern while in Walmart the other day! I like your choice of the Chambray, and think that a drapier fabric will look lovely too. All the details are beautiful! I hope your hand is recovering nicely.
ReplyDeleteI love this. It looks so good on you. Before you give up on it, wash it 4 or 5 times to get the fabric to soften up. I do this with my linen shirts, just keep putting them in the wash each week even if they haven't been worn, so they get past that stiff, wrinkly stage.

DeleteI made a denim skirt once but distressed it, making it more of an every-now-and-then garment. Then I'd complain about how stiff and "new looking" it looked. And I started washing it every time I did laundry!
I do love it too. It's a piece that goes well with almost anything.

DeleteKesha, I think the top looks great on you. On the instructions of the sleeve, I thought it was me. But I felt the same way you did. After seeing your version, I'm encouraged to try it again. I made this top last year and ended up gifted it to my sister.
DeleteI'm always skeptical of things I think are "reissues" but I always think, "something could be different! " I'm loving the wrap blouses now, and you reminded me to get some more chambray in my stash!
ReplyDeleteI want to make this top. I shy away from wrap dresses and tops but this one has piqued my curiosity. I am rather long waisted for a petite and thought I would need to lengthened the top. I like your chambray version and I am glad you posted that the FBA was moved to the gathers. Now if I could just get my sewjo going again.
