FAIL: Burda 09/2018 #106

Grrrrrrrr!!!! Wahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I've been looking for a slim (not skinny) pant pattern and (while working on the dress that's still a WIP), I found this pattern in that same issue.

1) While tracing the pattern, I commented more than once about the leg shaping (slim vs skinny!!). I should have quit then.
2) When I pulled the fabric out it was really wrinkled. I went to iron it and it stuck to the iron / left a residue on my iron! I should have quit then.
3) The fabric has vertical stretch (and no horizontal stretch) which always confuses me. What would one sew that they only need vertical stretch? So I cut on the crossgrain and *just* had enough fabric to do so.
4) I had major issues inserting the inseam zippers for some reason. I should have quit then.

Other issues I had with the pattern is shaping through the inseam and side seam but less shaping through the center seams. I had to tweak the back leg a bit. There were notches on the inseam and side seam but no notches on the center seams. The waistband is just a rectangle. Blergh.

I cut a size 44, took some measurements and made some changes right away to add to the CB length and back crotch extension. I took the side seams in a little through the knee.

My fabric was pretty similar to the magazine fabric in print...

But I've never felt a rayon/spandex fabric that felt like this. It's a gabardine so twill-like...but it felt very plasticky. Meh.

see where that seam hits?

No real pictures because I was SO annoyed and OVER IT. And there's no saving them because they give me diaper butt AND they are uncomfortable on. So they may look okay, but they are not.

Oh, I should state that at some point I decided that these could be a (wearable?) muslin for my nice navy ponte but I am NOT using my ponte for this pattern!

ONWARD!

I'm overrrrrrr itttttttt with my recent fails. Although I made Vogue 9111 for Thanksgiving and it's cute and awesome so there's that. I'm going to finish up my blazer from the tailoring class this weekend. I want to have it complete to take with me to my sewing meetup next Saturday :)

In other news...when the local sewing group traveled down to Rochester to Ginny's, we found ourselves in a discussion about painful developments with the reproductive system that comes with getting older. It's like I turned 40 and my body said, NOW! I've suffered with ovarian cysts for awhile but those bother me most during ovulation and unless one ruptures (seriously, WORST pain ever), it's not unbearable. I've dealt with small fibroids for awhile and more recently endometriosis. Oy.

I've been suffering the past few months. Now, I'm obviously not a skinny minny but THIS is definitely not the norm:

Every month for about 2 days, I have this bloating. It is so PAINFUL. And now I'm sure it contributes to my lack of mojo. I'm working with my doc to try to figure out a plan...In the meantime, I'm trying to focus my sewing at the same time and all these fails ain't helping! Grr!

In other non-sewing news, I blew-out my hair last week in preparation for braids and my braider canceled on me. Booooo! So I decided to flat iron it and I've been fussing and whining about slow growth but EEK it grew fast! I've always known the back of my hair literally grows twice as fast and I AM still frustrated by how much longer the back is! :)

Then I had to do a fro comparison pic and Oh! Okay...I suppose it is growing! LOL!

Hopefully you had an awesome Thanksgiving if you'e in the US....and if not, hopefully you at least had pie! :)

Love your hair--straight and curly. I am loving ponte slim fit front seam pants. Haven't made any yet. So sorry the Burda pattern and test fabric didn't work out. When I first saw the pic of the pattern, I said, that's exactly what I want. Now we know.

They look really good. Pity about the fit, they look good enough to be worth persevering with sorting fit. Once you've figured it out it should work pretty similarly for all Burda pants.
Burda pants always work really well for me. They have flatter back crotch that works better for me.

Oh Burda normally does work for me. This pair and this fabric unfortunately, do not. They may look okay (and remember, I’ve left off the pics of the back because BLEH! Lol!!!) but they certainly don’t feel okay and I’ve fiddled as much as I’m willing. But that’s okay! Not every pattern is a winner.

Thank you!

I did consider eliminating the yoke seam but really, it isn’t quite the silhouette I thought it would be.

Wise choice on the pants riddance. You look so great in the pants you make because you are not afraid to say NO to what doesn't work for you. I love your fro. I really think it is my favorite do on you and shows of your lovely face so nicely.

I"m sorry you are living with endometriosis. I finally had a hysterectomy when I was 47 but by that point the endo had spread throughout my pelvis and a number of my other organs were stuck to my uterus, ovaries, themselves... I was so happy to be rid of the 'triad of evil'; it was like getting rid of 40 pounds of concrete from my pelvis. Unfortunately my GP did not recognize I also had a pelvic floor dysfunction as well. Because that wasn't treated promptly it led to a myofascial pain disorder that is now starting to get better after four years of physio.
This isn't meant to be a big, whingy poor-poor me moment but a 'I"m glad you are getting that taken care of before it gets even worse' statement. I wish you all the good things and a resolution to your pain.

THANK YOU and I’m glad you’re on the road to recovery. That’s exactly why I chose to share though, there’s not a lot of information sharing and it’s easy for doctors to write things off.

I have an appointment in January but wanted to get in sooner because I feel like there’s something going on with my left side specifically. The nurse wants me to wait but I think I’m going to call back Monday and push to get in sooner.

I LOVE my fro. The last time I straightened it to trim my ends I immediately got back in the shower and washed it :-D

I rarely expend a ton of energy trying to force something to work. There are SO many patterns out there!

Something about year 40 wreaks havoc on the body! I can't eat gluten anymore, have weird digestive drama, and bloating for daaaaayyyyys. I don't understand!

I am team natural all the way and love your hair!

I'm with you on chucking a fail to the curb. Too many patterns, not enough time. =)

unfortunate about those pants but I agree the clue of the troublesome fabric means you probably should have followed your instinct and tossed them at the outset :) some fabrics while described nicely are just yuck! love your short hair, are you growing it now? hope you feel better and get things sorted soon.

Sometimes I find it hard to just walk away from a project, even though I know it's a fail. I don't know why. Maybe I keep thinking I can save it some how and it never works out. I feel you on the bloating thing. I have Gastroparesis, celiac disease, IBS and a host of other problems. I wasn't diagnosed for 17 years on the Celiac and the gastroparesis took 2 years before the doctor would test me. Definitely get tested for everything and I hope it turns out to be nothing. Meanwhile, can't wait to see how the dress turns out!

Ask your doctor to refer you to a gynecologist (if you don't already have one) who specializes in endometriosis. I had a really good gyne but even he didn't recognize the pelvic floor stuff. I also had myometriosis (where the endometrium grows into the uterine muscle.) Ever period felt like I was being eaten by wolves because I was essentially bleeding into a muscle.
Good on your for trying to move your appointment up. If you have ANY questions please ask.

I have not experienced what you are going through, but it seems for most of us we should have to separate sets of clothes... One that fits our "normal" bodies, and another one for those times when our hormones get crazy!
And it'd be no use trying to see and fit clothes when your tummy is twice it's normal size :)
Hope you can figure out what's going on and maybe during those days just do some planning, prepping, tracing/cutting out patterns, but no actual sewing.

Thanks Sox! I will keep that in mind. I appreciate it!

TOO MANY PATTERNS!

Ugh. I can do without all this crazy body stuff!!!!

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

Exactly. I *knew* better. Grrrrr!

Thanks :) I am letting it grow out. It's going to be a journey!

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

That is SO frustrating. I can't begin to imaging suffering that long :/

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

Thanks Chabe! I'm totally trying to plan a couple floatier dresses for those times!

I am sorry the Burda pants didn't work out like you wanted! The fabric you chose is awesome, and I liked the vision you were going for.

I love your hair! It is growing beautifully, and looks so shiny and healthy!
