New Look 6314 and a modified McCall's 6886

I have maintained my Pattern Review membership primarily for managing my pattern stash. And every now and then I realize something is missing and then its 'woe is me I have to audit my entire collection now'. Since my paid membership expired, I haven't renewed, and my collection is out of control. I keep finding stuff or unfortunately, NOT finding things! Oy!! I have to either clean it up and pay for the membership or find another solution which is NOT appealing because it's well over 600 patterns. WHEW.

All that to say, I didn't know I had NL6314 in stash. LOL!

It's now OOP

I was into the shorter view with drawstring immediately and I'd found a 1 yard cut of fine French Terry in a pretty floral at Cali Fabrics. I knew I could squeeze this top from the yard of fabric even though it called for 1 1/4.

I cut a size 14 neckline and graded to a 16 for the rest, typical for me. I made a pivot and slide FBA and no other fitting adjustments.

It is NOT hi-low and it isn't riding up; I have terrible posture. TERRIBLE!

I love the length and the easy-wearing style. The neck binding went in perfectly and I like the tie - mostly. It's a pretty wide hem and then the tie is just free floating in there. I used eyelets vs buttonholes and my twill tape is a bit short; I'd bought it for something else but it matched this color perfectly.

I don't like the sleeve bands, they're kind of wimpy. I'd make them wider if I made this pattern again.

I held my breath the entire time while coverstitching that neckline! LOL!!!!

Then I wanted to use this rose-colored ponte for a coordinating dress. I wanted to use M7430 but I COULDN'T FIND IT! Blergh. I wish I'd used my recently made NL6530 neckline/collar but I tried to DIY the adjustment on M6886 and I don't love it. But I also do not love this fabric. I think I got it from SR Harris and it feels...weird. I can't explain it. It is a ponte that washed up quite nicely. It has great stretch and recovery but something is just a little off in the feel of it. I also don't love the color. I wish it were a bit more muted. Lastly, I thought about it but then forgot to adjust the armholes. I've never made this pattern without sleeves and should have raised the armhole/brought it in a bit.

So the dress is meh. Not bad, will probably get worn, but not good. And I don't like them together. I wouldn't wear dress boots with the combo though, so I did take that into account...it would definitely be a more casual/sporty pairing...

I've always made the scoop neck version of this dress. I wanted to attach a collar and traced the crew neck onto my fabric. I think this neckline is too high (other patterns with a collar seem to sit a little lower) and the collar is too big around not my neck but not big enough to slouch. And it's too tall to stand as one layer but a little too short to fold down nicely.

Pairing it with a denim jacket didn't even make me love it.

Now, I will admit that I was having a super, horrible, crappy day when I took the pics. Yes, I know I look like I'm ready to murder someone (I didn't!). So I gave it another shot and still...meh.

Top - winner. Dress - a little less so. It happens!

My mojo has been absent. I have my daughter's Burda sweatshirt cut out and will get that done this weekend. And I ordered this African print cotton (IDK if it's actual Ankara??) from Michael Levine and plan to make a fun pair of pants to pair with my new RTW/DIY Black Panther hooded top.

The HTV is "Vegas Gold" from Expressions Vinyl (affiliate link in sidebar)
The image came from Divas Craft Too on Etsy (NAYY)

I was going to make high-waist pants and a fitted tee but found this hoodie on clearance at Target for $5 and decided to go sporty. I may add carriers and a tie/belt to the pants. The drawstring on the top obscures T'Challa and must go!! :) Or someone made a great suggestion to do a Celtic knot to secure them. I gambled that these metallics would match!! We'll see!

I love the ponte color. Haven’t even started on my attire for the black panther premiere which reminds me I need to secure my ticket lol.
Funny thing tho I’m thinking about letting my PR subscription go to we shall see.
Look forward to seeing your pants 👖 done

The flower top is cute! I like the dress, but sometimes photos don’t do reality justice. If you aren’t feeling it, you aren’t feeling it. I’ve always kept a digital stash organized by type so I can scroll through what I have, then my real patterns are stored by brand and number for easy retrieval. Which is great except when I pull patterns, don’t make them, and don’t put them back. Or when my digital images are really bad tiny screen shots of a photo of a magazine page from the 1970s. I need to do an organization overhaul as well. I like my system, but I need to get my sewing space sorted and organized again, and get some of my more obscure magazines into the digital stash.

I love your floral top and dress together! And the Black Panther decal is brilliant. I have all my pattern stash on Pinterest, it's so handy - but am working on transferring it to Trello as I want to be able to search by fabric type.

Can't wait to see your Black Panther outfit!

Well I really love that pink on you. Nice work amd I'm sure you'll find the Perfect hack for that collar. You made me think about why I'm a subbie of PR. I'm keeping my PR subscription for the samr reasons plus I can order simplicity on their site if I really want a particular pattern (can't buy them here). How long have you been paying for membership? Funny how you found out quickly how useful it was.

I really like the top and dress together, and like the colour of the dress, too.

Great use of fabric coordination. I like how you have paired the two.

Just purchased my tix to Black Panthers, What am I wearing??? #clueless
I like the color of the M6886 (my fav pattern). I always wanted a collar to it, but didn't find one that really fit.
Can someone tell me what is PR?? (Pattern Review????)

Yes, Pattern Review! I updated :)

If you have a collar that you like, use that pattern and transfer the neckline to your M6886 pattern. You should be able to do this directly on the fabric. And then the collar from the other pattern will fit because it's the same neckline...but you'll be using your M6886 for the rest of the fit!

Thank you!!

Thanks Sandra!

Thank you Judith.

I've had my membership since 2013. I did some volunteering here and there and won a year membership once so I probably paid for 3 of the 5 years.

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

Thank you!! I'm so excited!!

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

Thank you!! I'll have to look up Trello. I never got into Pinterest.

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

Thank you!

Ooh that is my downfall too...having patterns all over the place. And yes, it would be great to get your mag collection digitized! It's too easy to forget the awesomeness inside of them!

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

Thanks!! YES get your ticket! LOL! :) I'll probably renew because it's just so easy to see everything there and the sorting/filtering isn't perfect but it's not bad. Especially since I have so many and my collection is stored like at the stores; company and then number. So I appreciate being able to quickly look at garment type. And, it equates to $2.50/month which, as sewing expenses go, ain't bad! LOL!

I hear you on the feel of ponte. That is one of the reasons I usually walk by. Sometimes they just have this yucky seventies feel to them, sort of a rough thing. The color is flattering on you and I do like the two pieces together. Nice fit on that top!

lauraborealis said...

I love both pieces, and the color of the ponte is really fabulous on you. Actually, that dress is ka-pow! The dress/jacket outfit shows it off better than the dress/sweatshirt.

Ooohhh -- Black panther sewing! I love the idea!!

I love all the looks!! You just look good in everything!

I bought the New Look 6314. Thanks for the heads up! My 27 yr old daughter loves "full" skirts. I had hoped it was up to size 22. Oh well, sizing up a skirt shouldn't be too hard??!! LOL!

I think the dress is absolutely lovely and that the collar is perfect, but what matters is how you feel about it. Do you think you'll like better on another day?
I'm always so impressed with your ideas and combinations!

Black Panther, woo hoo!!!! I actually like all that you have sewn. The floral top is nice, and goes well with the ponte knit dress.

I really like your dress. It looks great especially with the denim jacket. The floral top is so cute, too.

i think the dress is fab, and the color is amazing on you.. but, i also know that feeling when fabric just don't feel right :(

I really like the dress on you! The color is phenomenal too! I know if you don’t like it, you won’t wear it, so I totally understand...but I wish I looked that good in that type of dress! Also, a black panther outfit? Nice! Can’t wait to see.

I really love the top and I think the pink dress looks good, but I understand when something feels meh. I have large collection of patterns and I use Evernote to store pattern information. I love the search feature and I can sync it to my phone and computer. Can't wait to see your Black Panther outfit!

I just have my patterns saved as jpegs and sorted into albums on my IPad by type (dresses, suits, pants etc). I always worried that if I used an online app or program that if something happened to the online program that all my files would be lost. Plus I enjoy flicking through my photo albums of my patterns planning things to sew ifI ever had the time or found the right fabric

I like the dress on you, especially with the denim jacket

I love the dress! It’s a great color. I think you should let this marinate in your closet until spring and then see how you feel about it!

Thanks Kim!

Thank you Sheila!

KS_Sews (Dressmakingbacles) said...

Yes! It has a weird artificial feel to it that I am not accustomed to!

Thank you much Bunny!

Thanks Annie!

Thank you! I think grading that skirt up should be extremely easy because you only have to worry about the waist!

I like the top and I think it looks great with the dress, maybe wear with booties and not boots. I think it looks good also with the denim jacket. I do know how one has expectations about a garment and then it is not exactly what you had in mine. Maybe give it time out and perhaps it will look better when you are in a better frame of mine.

Well, I really like your dress. I think the color looks great on you and I really like it paired with the top - very pretty.
