5 Year Anniversary!

FIVE YEARS! I simultaneously cannot believe it's been that long and cannot believe it's ONLY been 5 years. I am completely in awe of the craft, still.

My story, why I sew and how I sew:
I've always been a crafty sort! I used to use my allowance to buy fabric (now I believe I was buying FQs or remnants) to make clothes for Barbie dolls. I'd fit them to the doll and then hand sew them in place.

Once my parents moved south, my mom would make a little money on the side sewing hats and head wraps to the women in the area. On a visit ~2010 she asked if I wanted to learn and I was all, NOPE! No thanks! LOL!

In 2011 or so I learned to crochet and that was my intro into the handmade garment world. Many of the crocheters I found also knit and some sewed garments. I pined for a machine after that and in January 2013, I got my wish!

As they say, the rest is history :)

WHY?
Because it's fun! I still marvel sometimes that I can take a piece of fabric and turn it into an actual, wearable THING!

I also believe everyone needs a hobby of some sort. My hands took me away from crocheting and knitting so I'm glad to have sewing...and to be back into some general crafting since getting my Cricut.

HOW?
I sew fast. I realized this during the 2014 season of Project Runway. There was a contestant named Kini. Kini sewed fast! Everyone would exclaim and wonder and without fail, he created nice garments (design aesthetics aside), sewn well, and in record time. I decided that like Kini, I just sew fast!

Be clear; I do not rush. (pet peeve: the assumption that saying something is quick/fast equates to not enjoying the process.) I don't even sew everyday! And much to Carolyn's surprise (we were chatting one weekend day), I don't spend huge chunks of time in there at once because I get bored.

What I am though is focused and pretty determined. I've mentioned before that before I cut something out I've got the order of construction decided (which is why Burda stupefies me sometimes!! Some of their instructions you need to follow at the precise moment you're working on that step). I know exactly what I'm going to do and I just...do it. I don't do a lot of dawdling and there's rarely indecision; and when there IS it's kind of maddening because I'm not used to it!

IDK...people ask and I assume they think I do nothing but sew in every spare minute but it's so not true. I do SO MANY other things too! One kind :side eye: soul messaged me on PR to tell me I was probably having marriage problems because I sew so much. I kid you not!!!

Also, I have young-adult children -- older teens such that they've been independent for quite awhile e.g., this mama does not do the laundry of giant people. They've both been doing their own since around 11 plus other actual chores!

And trading in 2600 sq ft for less than 1400 sq ft was LIBERATING! I do not miss having several bathrooms and miles of hardwood floors and a ton of windows and blinds and things to clean. clean. clean. Bleh!!! And the more space you have to fill, the more stuff you find to fill it with!!

Lastly, and I think SUPER importantly, I have a dedicated sewing space. It was such a game changer for me. It is amazing what all you can get done snatching little bits of time here and there!

Now for the fun stuff!!

In honor of my 5th anniversary, I have FIVE prizes to giveaway! Yay!!

Unfortunately, I will have to limit it to US entrants as 4 out of 5 are physical items and international shipping can be a landmine. Not to mention the rules around 'sweepstakes' in differing countries.

Rules:

  • Please do not share on other social media sites. I try to keep any giveaways I do to blog readers. I know that many readers don't often comment so don't feel badly about that!
  • Leave a comment about either a) your favorite pattern b) your favorite garment type to sew and/or c) your favorite fabric type to sew with. (Mine are a) too many to name!! b) pants!! including jeans and c) ponte!!) :) *comments must be left here on the blog*
  • Choose a specific prize from A - D; all will be entered into the drawing for prize E but there will be one winner per prize. I will use a random number generator to choose winners.
  • Come back on February 1st to see if you won and to claim your prize. I will be mailing everything on February 3rd! There is a 'contact me' option on the home page of my blog and my e-mail is sewcraftychemist --@-- gmail --dot-- com
Prize Pack A:
5 mystery patterns in the lower Big4 size range and 1 bonus all-sizes-included pattern.

Most start at size 6, one starts at size 8 and goes to a 16

Prize Pack B:
5 mystery patterns in the upper Big4 size range and 1 bonus all-sizes-included pattern.

I believe one goes to size 24 and one is L-XXL

These are hand picked and IMO similar styles among the patterns chosen. These are not throwaway patterns! Promise!! And yes, I used my Cricut to make little 'covers' for the bundles :-p

Prize Pack C:
5 (x2!) zippers in varying colors and lengths. Again, picked from the extensive zipper stash!

Prize Pack D:
5 awesome sewing bits and bobs!
  • 3 piece set of tailor's chalk
  • Vintage sew on snaps
  • Wonder Tape (you know I love this stuff)
  • Package of pins
  • Made for you pin-tray (well at least it's what I use mine for! I keep it on the bed of my sewing machine. I used my Cricut to create the vinyl transfer!)

My pin tray:

I got this in a grab bag from Michael's some time ago and have been using it for pins ever since!
I love that it's now sewing related even though it's a teapot :)

Prize E:
$20 gift card to Fabric Mart Fabrics (I will order the gift card when the winner is confirmed and provides an e-mail address for the e-card).

You have 5 (ish) days to enter! Through midnight on January 30th. Apparently Blogger is on Pacific time so keep that in mind!  Winners will be announced on February 1st.

Happy Sewing!

Entries are closed now! Thank you for sharing with me!!

Happy Anniversary 🎉
My favorite pattern style is a princess seam blouse. It's easy for me to get the fit I want & I can dress it up or down depending on fabric used. I've been using the same pattern for years. This is the year I'll try pants (last year it was jackets) & jeans got to have something to go with all the tops.
Cotton's, cotton blends & rayon
are the fabrics I've used most often.
Prize B please

Congrats on your 5th Anniversary of Blogging! My fav fav fav pattern is McCalls 6963. I tried it as I saw you sew it up and post it on the blog. It has become my TNT top. I make it in long & short sleeves, and I've lengthened it into a dress several times. I did not have to make one single change. It made me feel so good to sew it up straight from the pattern. Being 6' tall and busty, no hips/flat bum I'd gotten very discouraged with RTW and sewing too (so many adjustments....). I feel like a million bucks when I wear my M6963 makes.

I'd love a chance at Package A. Fingers crossed!

Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary, I love sewing so much too and I'm sure you'll keep sewing for a long long time in the future. I'm in the UK so can't participate in the giveaways but it is a lovely gesture!

Congratulations! My favorite fabric is silk crepe de chine. I would be excited to win D!

My favorite pattern is the Closetcase Carolyn Pj's. I'm about to start on my 10th pair. I also love the Jalie Elenore pants pattern. Congrats on your five year anniversary and thanks for doing this giveaway. I would be most interested in B.

I can't believe you've only been sewing for 5 years. Your stuff is amazing! I am just starting but I'm hoping that dresses will be my fave to sew because that's what i usually wear. Would love a shot at Surprise A!

Holy moly, that comment from PR! Only on that site would someone offer such a ~helpful~ message. Being someone whose thoughts brew slowly and who can be really indecisive I am kinda in awe of your sewing style and speed, but I can also totally see how you could accomplish it (without the accommpanying snide insituations!). Look at how many garments they produce in garment factories every day!
And even though I’m on the slower side of things I totally agree that it’s nonsensical to insist that things can only be enjoyed if you take your time. The “slow” movement has a lot of really frustrating and at times oppressive beliefs.

Kelly said...

Congrats on 5 years. And I loved reading about your sewing habits...I’m still in awe at your ability to make so many garments.
My all time fave garment to make is a dress, and I prefer sew with knits as they are so comfy. Buying a cover stitch machine last year was a game changer!
D is the prize I’m eyeing!
Have some fun today and go sew something!

Love your blog. I would like to sew pants but I sew more skirts and sweaters. I am amazed at your progress in just a few years. I like prizes B, D and E.

Having a dedicated space is amazing (surprisingly, I sew less with dedicated space). Looking to change that in 2018. Looking forward to seeing what you sew for spring.

jael said...

5 years? really? Wow. time flies. My fave is StyleArc Tessa: I've made this several times and I love how it can block and it's awesome. I love to sew pants, not becuase I love to sew pants but because getting them right gives me such enormous satisfaction becuase RTW is not made for women with my bottom half. And... Gosh, look, I know it's lazy but ... every now and again sewing in a crisp cotton is a joy, for the ease of the exercise :)
I'd love a crack at A please. (Or C, or D, but A.. :)

THANK YOU and happy 5th blogday!

I so enjoy your blogs! I really enjoy making skirts, but I am trying hard to get out of my comfort zone and take on more challenging projects. Fabric...so far,the vast majority of the fabric I own has come from thrift stores! The nicest piece, a 4 yard piece of emerald green wool, is now a lovely skirt.
I like selection A, but C or D are also very nice! Fingers crossed!!

Congratulations on your 5 year blog-anniversary. I admire the commitment. I love separates pants and girly tops. I love B or C (don't want to be greedy LOL). Thank you for the opportunity of the giveaway. Hope to read your blog for many years to come.

Happy 5 year anniversary. I wish I was a fast sewer how ever I know one of the reasons why I’m not as fast as I could is because I don’t use my machines to the best of their ability lol
My favorite thing to sew is dresses
I would like to develop more into jackets and that be my favorite thing
And I pick E

Chris said...

Congratulations on your anniversary! I'm still a newbie at garment sewing so I don't have a favorite pattern or garment type yet. I got into sewing as a quilter, so cottons still put me in my comfort zone. I would love to be entered to win Prize Pack A, thank you!

My favorite thing to sew is a tunic or a dress. I would love prize B. Thanks for the giveaway.

Congratulations on 5 years! I have been following you for most of that time. You are such an inspiration and I have purchased many a pattern at your recommendation, so thanks so much!

Currently, I am sewing dresses, looking forward to spring. I love a dress in Spring!

I wil put my name in the hat for Prize A, I think. Thanks for celebrating with such a fun giveaway!

Happy Anniversary! I have been following you for about 3 of your 5 years. I am an older 50 something woman learning to sew by following some favorite bloggers, you included. It has probably been a slow process but nonetheless a good one. I am finally able to create things that I will wear, lol

Right now I am working on fitting blouses and knit tops to my frame. I go with one type of garmet at a time till I get it done well.

I choose package A and personally want to say thank you for your sense of humor and continuing on sharing your talents with the sewing community!

Blessings!!

It is so nice of you to host this giveaway! I've been following your blog for some time but never commented. My favorite patterns are Burda magazine patterns and the reason I love your blog to see how your Burda creations turn out. I enjoy shirt making the most, which I like to make from nice crisp cottons with interesting prints. I'd like a shot at winning prize A, since I don't own many patterns that don't require tracing and it would be interesting to branch out and try other pattern companies.

Congrats on 5 years! Toss my name in the box for Surprise A. I love M7198 and make it again and again in pontes and other bottom weight knits. Quick, easy, fit well and I can change up the leg shape as I wish. You keep me laughing!

Tiffani said...

Happy anniversary!! Your blog is my favorite sewing blog, I always get excited to see new posts. :)

My favorite fabrics to sew are knits, especially more stable knits. They are easier and bit more forgiving.

FabricMart is another favorite of mine so I'd love to put my name in for prize E!

Been following you since the other blog. Kudos to 5 years, it is no small feat. All your posts are fun and informative reading. The way you processes and produce all those garments is fascinating. I am still trying to make my first wearable garment. Sigh.
I like a shot as "A" if possible.

Lisa said...

Congrats on 5 years! Yours is one of my favorite blogs. I also feel a kinship as we both live in the tundra of MN. I love to sew all the things, so can't really pick a favorite! I would love to win "C", the zippers. Always handy to have extras in the stash.

Catherine said...

Congratulations on 5 years! It just doesn't seem that long--I lurked for a long time. I enjoy sewing tops and McCall's 6964 is my most repeated pattern. It's simple lines bely the varied results I get. My favorite fabric, though, is rayon challis. Such a wonderful feeling to sew with and wear. I would be thrilled to win package D-- that pin tray is so cute!

Unknown said...

Congratulations! I just started following your blog this year when a post about SR Harris caught my eye--long time shopper there! I've returned to sewing my own clothes after a really long hiatus. Patterns have changed as well as the fabric, so I really enjoy your blog and the information you provide. I also like seeing the blogs you follow and check back regularly to see what's happening.
My favorite pattern right now is the Basic InstinT (tee pattern) from Secondo Piano.
My favorite fabrics--who can pick??--are knits right now. I've been known to go into a fabric store just to pet the fabric!!
I would love a shot a Prize B.

It is so nice of you to have this contest, and I am in awe of your creative sewing abilities after only 5 years. I do not have a favorite pattern or fabric that I like to work with, because I do not sew for myself right now. Instead, I sew for two senior citizens charities (one for 10 yrs and the other for 2 yrs.). I sew handbags (my own patterns), fashion scarfs, adult and child aprons, placemats, napkins, etc. I sew everything from my own stash as I have been sewing for more than 50 yrs. and my stash has gotten quite large. The Senior Citizens sell these items at bazaars and craft sales at reasonable prices and proceeds go to seniors where help is needed. I know quite a few seniors who taken advantage of the services offered by these two organizations. Surprize package A or B would be nice. Thank you for any consideration.

Congratulations on your 5 year anniversary! I enjoy reading your blog and I'm amazed at how quick you sew. I'm not a fast sewer but in my former day job I was very fast and I always had to remind people the difference between going fast and rushing.
Me favorite garment to sew so far is a mini dress. I was sewing Seamwork Mess but now I'm looking SewDIY Lou box dress 1.
I'd love to win prize D because I've heard of wonder tape but never have used it.
Thanks!

I have also been sewing for right around 5 years, I will have to look back and see exactly when I started. What I think is amazing that both you and I are at the point where we sew (mostly) all of our own clothes. I just recently got around to tackling pants, but I think you've been there a lot longer than I have. What an amazing thing to tell people interested in sewing- just jump in and in less than 5 years you can be sewing your whole wardrobe (if you want)! Anyways, my new favorite thing to sew is pants (my old favorite is bras), and i would love prize D! Thanks for the great giveaway!

I found your blog through your reviews on pattern review. I admire your sewing and your fitting skills. I am new to sewing and my current favorite is to sew with knits, something I am just learning to do. I’ve been learning with ponte and a cotton/lycra jersey and not sure which is my favorite yet. I’d love to try for prize D.

Congratulations on your 5 years of an amazing sewing journey! And I was surprised. I know I spend all day in my sewing cave but I use it as a retreat and only sew for short periods of time. You are fast and should not be ashamed of that fact but the person who messenged you on PR overstepped, even if they felt they were being concerned. BTW, don't enter me in the giveaway.

I can't wait to see where your sewing goes in the next couple of years!

I follow you on Bloglovin'. My favorite pattern at the moment is probably the Itch to Stitch Lisbon Cardigan. I'd love to win D.

You're one of my favorite blogs, and I'm blown away by how much you accomplish. I've just got a cricut machine (but not the fancy "maker" that cuts fabric) and am looking forward to seeing you cover that, too! I would appreciate being entered in prize D. Congrats!

Forgot to say what I enjoy sewing. Knit tops or cardigans are my favorites now.

Congratulations on 5 years! I have followed you on PR and on your blogs for much of that and it has been impressive to see how your skills have grown. You once told me you didn't realize you could change a pattern up to make it your own (I'm paraphrasing). :)

My favorite thing to sew is knit tops. I think I purchase every knit top pattern from the Big4. Yikes! That said, my choice would be C- zippers. Not that I need them for knit tops, but I do sew other things. ;)

Thanks for doing this.

paloverdeblooms said...

5 years? My goodness. I still remember when I first saw you commenting on PR. Do you recall those fitted blouses you were making early on? Congratulations! I love following what you make. You are one of my inspirations but I know I will *never* be able to sew like you since I am very slow and easily distracted (and after more than 50 years, I really do know this).
My favorite pattern is actually a category: Vogue coat and suit patterns (mostly designer and couturier) from the 1940s through 1970s with a few from the '90s thrown in. Not that I make these patterns, but I love them for their design.

My prize choice if I were to win: D, the assortment of chalk, snaps, pin holder, etc.

Deborah said...

Congratulations! I love to sew everything! Right now, I have a huge stash of knits to sew. I've been making a lot of fleece mittens too. I would love to throw my name in for C - the zippers. Can't have enough zippers. Thanks!!

Congrats on your 5 year anniversary. I don't have a favorite type of pattern but I do love sewing on cotton and cotton blends. If I were to win I would choose package B. Thanks for the give away.

There is no way I could ever pick a favorite pattern...ever! My tastes change and too many new styles are available now. Favorite fabric? I want to say linen though I find myself sewing more and more with knits. I also am into Upc6cling so there is the little thrill of mixing fabrics and getting them to work. I fall into the group B package. Happy Anniversary to you and I hope you continue blogging for as long as you enjoy doing your blog. So many of my favorites have suddenly stopped leaving me to wonder if they had an emergency or just dropped out.

Masha said...

Ooh, fun! I'd say a) the Bonn Shirt from ITS, b) button-down shirts (but only if they are for me, otherwise they're a slog), and c) is plaid a fabric type? LOL. I'd love prize B.

Happy Fifth year blogiversary - I started seriously sewing about 5 years ago too :-)

Favorite pattern/most used is the Maria Denmark Kirsten T - I have hacked that thing all different ways! (And never made it as is, lol!). Fabric has got to be Art Gallery Knits. Pricey, but worth it imo. Though I just sewed with some wool and it was so gorgeous to sew with! As I am on a fabric stash only diet, I would love package 'E', as its PAINFUL!!!!!

Thank you for the giveaway, I would love to be entered for item D.

Good for you also as a mom to another mom for teaching your kids the life skills that they need to survive and take care of themselves. I also taught my kids to do laundry at around 10 and they loved it. So give yourself a pat on the back. I really like to make dresses for my daughter and myself I also love to make my own leggings. I am so glad I found your blog it's very enjoyable to read so keep up the great work, I really look forward to your makes, you are a fabulous seamstress. You know I love me some (1) Jalie (2) jeans out of (3) denim. I have made around 15 pairs of that pattern and have no intention of stopping; it is my palate-cleanser!

Congrats on 5 years of wonderful sewing. I have been following you from the beginning and have watched you grow and it just inspires me. I am such a slow sewer, lol and am lazy to boot. I always feel like I never can get enough time to sew, even when I take days off to sew- I always end up doing something else. Please don't stop blogging!!!!
My favorite type of clothing to sew are dresses and skirts, using knits- ponte, scuba, jersey and stretch denim.
For a prize, I like D for all of the different additions to the sewing stash.
Would have chosen B, but you and I have the same taste in patterns and I think its possible I may already have the ones you are giving away.
Sew on and sew well- Much love

a. My favorite pattern right now is Paco Peralta's Vogue 1567. I'm still trying to get the t-shirt to fit comfortably (it's designed to create a straight line across one's shoulders and neck) and I adore the skirt! I made it in a gray business-suiting poly-wool and am planning to make the skirt in a floral cotton lawn for spring/summer!
b. My favorite fabrics are cottons, wools and silks with body.
c. My favorite garment to sew is the shirtwaist dress. I'm trying to master a vintage 1940's shirtwaist dress (Simplicity 1114)

I'd love to win Mystery Prize A!

Congratulations on achieving 5 years of sewing! I'm with you on the "speedy sewing." It's not that you're rushing; it's that you have the steps mapped out in your head so you are super-efficient.

Your idea to have a raffle is awesome and I think I might go through MY stash and figure out what I could do!

Congrats on hitting year five! You are such an inspiration. Please don't enter me in the contest as I have more than I need so would prefer another "kind soul" have a chance at your lovely gifts. It just has to be YOURS, a place that no one else has anything in (bad English?). It totally increases the productivity. Love your jacket. It's a great design and you did it justice.

Thank you for the opportunity! I wish you many more years of blogging/instagraming or what ever new technology crosses our paths.

Yes, I am a long time lurker who rarely comments! I found your blog through Diary of a Sewing Fanatic's blog feed and I love to read about your projects even when they don't work out exactly like you planned. I am getting back into sewing after a long hiatus so I am rediscovering my favorites. My favorite items to sew right now are skirts as there are less fitting issues! Drawing A, please. -

Thanks,
K

Woohoo - five years blogging! Thanks for having a give-away.
I'm all about woven fabric to make blouses (and dresses). I wear a uniform for work, so I sew myself playclothes: Hawaiian shirts, funky '70s style blouses.
I'd love to win Prize Package B.

Congratulations on 5 years! You are very generous to share this anniversary with everyone. Prize 'A' looks like a fun mystery. My favorite patterns to sew are usually Burda. Or Ottobre. Love the style and the fit and I actually like to trace and add my own seam allowance. Cheers to many more years of your sewing relationship!
